Connecting Hearts Through Tradition

OUR STORY

Born in Kyoto in 1918, Kanbe Juzu blends traditional beauty with modern sensibility. For over 100 years, we have crafted authentic Kyoto-style prayer beads (京念珠®), preserving a heritage that transcends time. Each piece is handmade by skilled artisans, produced in small quantities to honor the integrity of the craft and the precious materials we work with.

Prayer beads have long been more than objects—they are tools of connection, linking hearts and intentions across generations. Even in an age of mechanization, Juzu continue to be made by hand in Kyoto, a testament to their sacred role and the deep respect they command.

Guiding a century-old Kyoto craft into the future.

Meet the Founder

“I believe that in our fast-paced world, we all need a moment to return to ourselves.

Growing up in Kyoto’s 100-year-old tradition, I learned that a Juzu is more than a string of beads, it is a vessel for intention, a tool for grounding, and a bridge between generations. After the sudden passing of my father, I took up the mantle to ensure this delicate craft wouldn't just survive, but evolve.

When our artisans hold a finished piece and smile, saying, ‘This one is truly beautiful,’ they aren't just talking about the stone or the silk. They are talking about the spirit we’ve woven into it. My mission is to share that quiet devotion with you, providing a companion for your daily rituals of mindfulness and peace.” — Nobuaki Kanbe

The Heart of Craft

Philosophy

Our philosophy is rooted in monozukuri no omoi: a deep respect for materials, intention, and the art of creating with heart and purpose. Juzu were originally created as tools for Buddhist monks to count their prayers, and observing sincere prayer practices—hands clasped, beads held gently yet purposefully—reminds us that what we create must never be half-hearted.

We are entrusted with crafting something meaningful, something that carries the weight of human hope, grief, gratitude, and reflection. This belief guides every decision we make.

Handmade With Integrity, Care, and Time-Honored Skill

Craftsmanship

A single juzu is the culmination of many traditional crafts—stone cutting, wood shaping, silk threading, tassel making —brought together in harmonious precision. At Kanbe Juzu, each artisan oversees the entire creation process from start to finish, giving every piece a sense of personal pride, accountability, and soulful attention. Each bead is meticulously handmade using time-honored techniques, uniting centuries-old Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary refinement. Drawing from rare natural materials as well as classic woods and stones, every component is shaped, selected, and assembled with quiet dedication.

A Bridge Between Hearts, Across Time

Meaning

Juzu have long served as tools for prayer and meditation, but their deeper purpose is to connect—connecting the heart to intention, the present moment to inner calm, and people to one another. Each bead holds a story: of the hands that crafted it, of the tradition that shaped it, and of the person who wears it. Whether used for reflection, meditation, or as a quiet companion in everyday life, Kanbe Juzu invites presence, sincerity, and gentle grounding.

It is more than a beautiful object—it is a vessel of meaning.

Nurture Through Mindful Use

A Message from Our Craftsmen

We kindly ask that you care for your Juzu with the same respect and mindfulness with which it was made. Crafted from natural materials—wood, stone, glass, and silk—your Juzu will gently develop warmth and character over time, reflecting your own journey.

Please avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or strong lighting, and handle the threads and tassels gently to preserve their delicate structure.

From the workshops of Kyoto to the hands of those in New York and beyond, we hope this Juzu will walk beside you for many years, carrying the spirit, history, and quiet devotion of the craftsmen who brought it to life.
